Forty Files, One Colour

PUB·2 MIN·376 WORDS

Open any app that grew quickly and count the greens. There will be several, each chosen by a reasonable person on a reasonable day. Nobody decided to be inconsistent. The decision simply had no home, so it was made again on every screen.

What a Design System Is For

A design system gives each visual decision one home: a named value, delivered to every screen, used by components that offer only the options the company is prepared to support. Changing the brand colour becomes one edit, reviewed once, instead of a search across forty files.

The value is in what it refuses. A button with three approved variants is a product decision. A button that accepts any colour is a suggestion.

Build or Extend

Teams often assume the choice is between accepting Google's design language whole and building their own from nothing. The platform says otherwise: "Material is built entirely on public APIs, so it's possible to create your own design system in the same manner" (Android). The cheapest position is the middle one. Extend what exists, add only what the brand needs, and inherit the platform's future work for free.

One feature deserves a deliberate decision by whoever owns the brand. Android can recolour an app from the user's wallpaper, and "Dynamic color is available on Android 12 and above." (Android). That is either a welcome personal touch or your brand colour replaced by a stranger's holiday photo.

Keeping It True

A design system nobody checks decays into documentation. The check is automatable, and Google is direct about the method: "Screenshot testing is the recommended way to verify visual attributes in Compose UIs" (Android). Every component is rendered and compared on each change, so an unintended difference is caught before a customer sees it.

What to Ask Your Team

  • How many places define our primary colour? The answer should be one.
  • Can a screen use a value that is not in the system? If yes, it will.
  • Who decided whether the app follows the user's wallpaper colours?
  • What fails the build when a component changes appearance?
